During WWII, Duke E. Gifford is second in command of the USS Thunderfish, a submarine which is firing off torpedoes that either explode too early or never explode at all. It's a dilemma that he'll eventually take up personally. Even more personal is his quest to win back his ex-wife, a nurse; but he'll have to win her back from a navy flier who also happens to be his commander's little brother.

Two activists and lovers meet a thrillseeking anarchist who wants to help them in their missions to improve the world. Unsure about the what and how, they start to doubt whether they can even make a difference at all - until their new friend proposes a radical plan. A German living in India during World War II is blackmailed by the English to impersonate an SS officer on board a cargo ship leaving Japan for Germany carrying a large supply of rubber for tyres. His mission is to disable the scuttling charges so the captain cannot sink the ship if they are stopped by English warships.
Tatiana is forty-two years old and she is a stylist for one of Kyiv’s women’s magazines. She is ironic, self-confident, Tatiana lives in a large house on the suburbs of the Ukrainian capital and she enjoys the freedom that her recent divorce gave her. Her quite successful life is interrupted by the outbreak of the war. Friends and acquaintances come to her house, including her ex-husband and colleague who has a crush on her. Together, they watch how Russia destroys their city. After a few days, almost everyone tries to get out of Kyiv and persuades Tatiana to follow. But she can’t make up her mind.

At a mine on the shared edge of France and Germany, an underground explosion leads to the entrapment of a group of French miners. In an effort to save the trapped Frenchmen, German miners Wittkopp and Kasper take it upon themselves to traverse a crumbling war tunnel leading down into the mines. Yet, though the workers harbor no political biases against one another, their callous, less tolerant bosses hope to halt this cross-cultural rescue mission.
