Sartika, a pregnant young woman, moves away from her city hoping to provide a better future for her child. She meets Maya, a coffee shop owner in Pantura. Maya takes care of Sartika and helps with her deliveries. While treating a policewoman for smoking, hypnotherapist Michael Strother has a telepathic vision of a young girl floating beneath the surface of a stream. It is often easier to suppress stressful experiences instead of dealing with them. And so Klara stands alone in a clearing looking for her child. The young mother sets off on her search and is drawn into the dark forest more than she would like. Disoriented, she threatens to literally sink into it. Restless and guided by the calls of her child, she penetrates deeper and deeper into nature and thus also into the depths of her own consciousness. Accompanied by the gnawing certainty of a terrible truth, she walks on the threshold between reality and dream.

Sayra, a Native Honduran teenager, hungers for a better life. Her chance for one comes when she is reunited with her long-estranged father, who intends to emigrate to Mexico and then enter the United States. Sayra's life collides with a pair of Indigenous Mexican and Mestizo-Mexican gangmembers who have boarded the same USA-bound train.

Fais was impressed by Ahmad, an 11-year-old boy, who visited the Al-Mubarak Tahfiz Al-Quran Islamic Boarding School with his grandparents. The visit was memorable for Fais, the son of the owner of the Islamic boarding school, who remembered his father's will to continue the struggle of the Islamic boarding school.

Several young girls were killed in a rural area. Thus Inspector Matthaei has to travel to the region where it happened and has to search for the killer. When all the people suspect a roamer to be the killer he gets lynched and everybody thinks that the crimes will stop now but not Matthaei who searches for a blond girl that looks just like the ones that were murdered. He finds one and stays with her and her mother, attracting the murderer with the girl trying to catch him this way.

As Constance (Natasha Richardson) and Nina (Toni Collette) gather at the deathbed of their mother, Ann (Vanessa Redgrave), they learn for the first time that their mother lived an entire other lifetime during one evening 50 years ago. In vivid flashbacks, the young Ann (Claire Daines) spends one night with a man named Harris (Patrick Wilson), who was the love of her life.
