Overview
In the midst of a snowstorm, a journalist dives back into the memories of her most recent investigation. Following the sudden eclipse of star figure skater Violeta Martínez, the journalist travels to Violeta’s hometown, a tropical village on the West coast of Mexico. There she encounters an intricate labyrinth of clues and wrong paths, surreal tales and enigmatic characters. As the story deviates and plunges into the night. A world fades into another.

Nearly thirty years after making his surrealist La Formula Secreta, director Rubén Gámez returned to filmmaking with this impressionistic portrait of modern-day Mexico. Reminiscent in some ways of Godfrey Reggio’s Koyaanisqatsi, Tequila appears to be a cinematic extension of Mexico’s muralist tradition, a contemporary equivalent of Diego Rivera or David Alfaro Siqueiros with vignettes, quick ideas, visual puns, cartoons, and political statements.

Tired of life as soldiers, Peachy Carnehan and Danny Dravot travel to the isolated land of Kafiristan, where they are ultimately embraced by the people and revered as rulers. After a series of misunderstandings, the natives come to believe that Dravot is a god, but he and Carnehan can't keep up their deception forever.
