Overview
Takeshiro Matsuura was a Japanese explorer who was the first person to document the inner reaches of what is now known as Hokkaido. He explored the area extensively during the mid 19th century and created a map of the island that included parts which had been ignored by earlier cartographers. He visited Ainu communities and compiled records of the large numbers of the population who had been conscripted for forced labor far from their homes. Matsuura suggested the name Hokkaido for the area

The movie is based on the autobiography of Horst Fantazzini. Son of an anarchist, he was known in Northern Italy as “the gentleman bandit” because he robbed banks without violence, with only a toy gun. After many convictions and jailbreaks, in the summer of 1973 he's being held in Fossano, Piedmont when he tries to escape again. This time things get messy and he has to use a real gun and take two prison guards as hostages.

Crooks Hans Georg Pauler and Ulrich Raffcyk raid a savings bank branch in a Hamburg suburb at eight in the morning and take bank employees Anna Klages and Kirstin Bauer hostage. The police initially play for time; more and more people, including reporters, turn up. Pauler and Raffcyk very quickly realize that they can exert pressure on the police via the media and the public. Their demands, half a million marks and a fast getaway car, are met after Pauler is identified and his criminal record shows him to be an unscrupulous character. After fourteen hours, the bank robbers leave the bank unmolested with the extorted money and begin their getaway. Supplied with beer and stimulants, they head for Münster, where Raffcyk's brother lives - a journey with an uncertain outcome for the two hostages.
