Overview
A workshop owner goes on a trip to the desert and goes missing. Everyone thinks he is dead. His wife takes over the work of the workshop. She meets a young man and he likes her. They decide to get married, but the husband suddenly returns.

Set in the suburbs of Cairo in the late 1930s, the story follows a middle-class Egyptian family grappling with the hardships of life after the death of their father, their sole breadwinner. The winter seas make life miserable enough, but the men must also harden themselves to rescuing survivors of U-Boat attacks, while seldom able to strike back. Traumatic events afloat and ashore create a warm bond between the skipper and his first officer.
