Overview
Mahendra Kumar Choudhuri, the middle prince of the Bhawal Estate was affected by syphilis and was taken to Darjeeling for treatment. He apparently died in Darjeeling and was cremated there. After 12 years, a Sanyasi shows up at the estate, arousing people’s curiosity and leading to a rumour that he is the lost prince of the Bikrampur Estate.

Jojo, a young judge, returns to his hometown after a series of events disturb his composure. Semi-retired Michigan lawyer Paul Biegler takes the case of Army Lt. Manion, who murdered a local innkeeper after his wife claimed that he raped her. Over the course of an extensive trial, Biegler parries with District Attorney Lodwick and out-of-town prosecutor Claude Dancer to set his client free, but his case rests on the victim's mysterious business partner, who's hiding a dark secret.
