A naive young college student, who is majoring in chemistry, is persuaded by her roommates and a would-be drug dealer to make LSD for them, and she winds up getting caught up in the "acid" lifestyle.

Two attractive girls pick up a young female hitch-hiker, new to the city. They give her some advice and directions to her destination, the beach house of an old friend. After purchasing more attractive clothing she is picked up and assaulted. Narrowly escaping, she finds herself on a beach crowded with weird hippies, bums and police. Finally she arrives at her boyfriend's house. Unknown to her, he has become homosexual and a strange situation develops climaxing in a lesbian ambush.

They, along with Grandma (Ruth McDevitt) trick out an old Greyhound bus and hit the road. The picaresque plotline brings the family into contact with a variety of colorful characters. The producers of In Search of America never declared outright that the made-for-TV film was intended as a series pilot, but it ends on an ambiguous note with plenty of loose plot ends. This surrealistic experimental film finds the son of a young nobleman staying with hash-smoking hippies in a seamy section of Munich. He falls for a hippie girl who is involved in shaking down the young man's parents for money. She falls in love with the young man but the group continues to extract money from the parents in return for their wayward son. When he discovers the shakedown, his rage leads to tragedy for the star-crossed lovers.

The series swansong, Beat '71, sees Kaji framed and sent to prison by her boyfriend's father and with the help of some hippies she strives to be re-united.
