In a small, poor town, a young worker falls in love with an actress from a traveling theater troupe and tries to keep her close, dreaming and working hard to rebuild a new town while the troupe increasingly faces decline and the end of its run.

And in the process, they form an unlikely friendship through the common bond of tragedy.

Set in the suburbs of Cairo in the late 1930s, the story follows a middle-class Egyptian family grappling with the hardships of life after the death of their father, their sole breadwinner. As he begins to write a farewell letter to his wife, the ghost of his father, who committed suicide, appears. He tries to dissuade his son from killing himself.
