Overview
Based on the 1910 novel by Henry Handel Richardson, thought to be an account of her own schooldays at the Presbyterian Ladies College in Melbourne. A young girl, Laura Tweedle-Rambotham who grew up in the outback, and at around the age of 14, is sent off by her poor mother who has scrimped and saved for her to go to a prestigious women’s private college in Melbourne, the Presbyterian Ladies College.

Life on the border to the GDR is as dreary as the "Werra-Post". Description of Irene, a modern, free-spirited girl with a good job as press secretary for a film company. Nevertheless, she finds it difficult to get a grip on her life. She has grown distant from her husband, but for her daughter's sake she does not want to divorce him. Her lover Ebbe, a controversial journalist, is closer to her, but his violent infatuation can also be too much of a good thing. In a series of casual erotic relationships, Irene does not find what she is looking for either.

In order to earn a warrior name, the son of Araguaia chief wanders the forest, falls in love with a girl from the Tocantins tribe, and defeats their bravest warrior. When his true identity is discovered, he makes a deal: promises to fight the Tapuias, another tribe which threatens the Tocantins, marries the Indian girl, and establishes the Ubirajara nation.
