Overview
Filip buys an 8mm movie camera when his first child is born. Because it's the first camera in town, he's named official photographer by the local Party boss. His horizons widen when he is sent to regional film festivals with his first works but his focus on movie making also leads to domestic strife and philosophical dilemmas.

Christmas Eve night of 1976. In a village in the newly formed Tarnobrzeg province, a local bus hits a young married couple and a twelve-year-old boy. In the presence of numerous witnesses, the victims are beaten to death with a wheel wrench. In the aftermath of this crime, all the villagers are united by a conspiracy of silence. Stingo, a young writer, moves to Brooklyn in 1947 to begin work on his first novel. As he becomes friendly with Sophie and her lover Nathan, he learns that she is a Holocaust survivor. Flashbacks reveal her harrowing story, from pre-war prosperity to Auschwitz. In the present, Sophie and Nathan's relationship increasingly unravels as Stingo grows closer to Sophie and Nathan's fragile mental state becomes ever more apparent.

At a remote lake house in the Adirondack Mountains, a couple entertains an out-of-town guest looking for inspiration in her filmmaking. The group quickly falls into a calculated game of desire, manipulation, and jealousy, unaware of how dangerously intertwined their lives will soon become.

Richard, a 40-year-old filmmaker conquered by an unexplained anxiety attack, lets go of his current shoot and wanders through nocturnal Paris, in search of answers, solace and inspiration. During this sleepless night, at random encounters, sometimes warm, sometimes disturbing, crossing foreign figures, unknown bodies or familiar faces, Richard will face his fears and question his deep desires... until dawn.
A teacher is handing out examination results to his students in an industrial school and he points out to them that work is the most important thing in a person's life. Karel is pleased with his results but Vláďa's are bad. During the holidays Karel goes off to a factory to get work experience. Vláďa prefers to laze about and read poetry. In the end, however, he decides to follow Karel's example. At first the work doesn't agree with him, but after a few days, he gets used to it and finally he is glad to be able to work in the factory. One day he is injured at work and in hospital he has time to think about his future. He tells Karel, who visits him in hospital, that he has decided not to carry on with studies which don't interest him. He feels he will be more useful if he stays on at the factory.

19-year-old Pia is an aspiring writer who is struggling to find materials for her book after being rejected by a literary agent. Desperate for fame and success, Pia starts secretly writing about Mei, her best friend and a rising actress with an authoritarian mother who confides in her about her personal struggles.
