Mike Vecchio and Susan Henderson are preparing for their upcoming wedding. However, they seem to be the only two people at the wedding that are happy. Mike's brother Richie and his wife Joan are going through a divorce, which is upsetting his overly devout Catholic mother Beatrice. Also, Susan's father is carrying on an affair and her sex starved older sister Wilma is going through her troubles with her husband Johnny. All this is going on while Mike's best friend Jerry is trying to bed the maid of honor, Susan's cousin Brenda.

James has a good job, a good home, a good wife, but it isn't enough. Ali is single, single-minded, singularly focused on James. They meet in the same room, in the same hotel. Mariella watches them - unknown, unseen, unheard. She's the hotel cleaner who deals with the debris, the aftermath of their passion. She dreams of a similar life. This has been the pattern for some time, but Ali wants more. James can't give it. He wants to keep it as it is. It starts to play with Ali's head. She schemes and dreams and fantasises. Things start to unravel, but Mariella is used to cleaning up mess. She is thorough; methodical, meticulous.

Gilles' wife, Elise, who smiles when she thinks of him, cooks and scrubs and cheerfully makes love to him, suspects during her third pregnancy that he is having an affair with her coquettish younger sister, Victorine. Elise suffers, usually in silence. She listens to her husband rave; she asks her priest; she breaks picture frames; she weeps. She decides on a strategy to keep him. Will she succeed?

Two lifelong friends bond whilst vacationing in a luxury Swiss Alps lodge as they ponder retirement. While Fred has no plans to resume his musical career despite the urging of his loving daughter Lena, Mick is intent on finishing the screenplay for what may be his last important film for his muse Brenda. And where will inspiration lead their younger friend Jimmy, an actor grasping to make sense of his next performance?
