Manhattan prosecutor Nick is charged with looking into the untimely death of city resident Matt, a musician who had AIDS. When he decides to settle for their relationship and ask Lucy's grandfather, Mr. Armstrong, for her hand in marriage, the reply is that he must first find a husband for her older sister, Gemma. Whilst finding her a potential mate, his life changes forever as he discovers true love and resolves issues in his own personal life.

Bus driver Stan Butler agrees to marry Suzy, much to the anguish of Mum, her son-in-law, Arthur, and daughter Olive. How, they wonder, will they ever manage without Stan's money coming in? Then Arthur is sacked, and Stan agrees to delay the wedding. Meanwhile, he hits on an idea: Arthur should learn to drive a bus. Somehow he does just that, and even gets a job. Stan then blackmails the Depot Manager into giving him the job of driver on the new money-making Special Tours Bus. Mike's brother Richie and his wife Joan are going through a divorce, which is upsetting his overly devout Catholic mother Beatrice. Also, Susan's father is carrying on an affair and her sex starved older sister Wilma is going through her troubles with her husband Johnny. All this is going on while Mike's best friend Jerry is trying to bed the maid of honor, Susan's cousin Brenda.
