While on a business trip, Tom Phillips is in a car accident caused by a reckless driver. Tom survives the accident with but a severe chronic back injury leaves him unable to continue with his career. The Phillips' buy a motel in the California desert and Tom with his wife Peg and their two children, Tina and Jamie make the long road trip to their new home. However, she had written some letters to Moreland, and these come back to haunt her when he tries to use them for blackmail.

Unity Field, a "free love" cult from the '70s, is mostly remembered for its notorious mass suicide led by Harris, its charismatic leader. While all members are supposed to burn in a fire together, young Cynthia is spared by chance. Years later, the nightmare of Unity Field remains buried in her mind. But when those around Cynthia start killing themselves, and she begins having visions of Harris, she may be forced to confront the past -- before it confronts her.
