A group of international criminals steal a large emerald from a heavily guarded Colombian mine and they plan to sell it on the black market. Unfortunately, the evil Dr. Igor is also manipulating other criminals, as well as the ones who stole the emerald, for his own benefit. Santo, a Mexican wrestler/Interpol agent works with the Colombian authorities in an attempt to recover the emerald and to stop Dr. Igor and his subordinates, as well.

Against a background of war breaking out in Europe and the Mexican fiesta Day of Death, we are taken through one day in the life of Geoffrey Firmin, a British consul living in alcoholic disrepair and obscurity in a small southern Mexican town in 1939. The consul's self-destructive behaviour, perhaps a metaphor for a menaced civilization, is a source of perplexity and sadness to his nomadic, idealistic half-brother, Hugh, and his ex-wife, Yvonne, who has returned with hopes of healing Geoffrey and their broken marriage.

Roy and Gilbert's fishing trip takes a terrifying turn when the hitchhiker they pick up turns out to be a sociopath on the run from the law. He's killed before, and he lets the two know that as soon as they're no longer useful, he'll kill again. The two friends plot an escape, but the hitchhiker's peculiar physical affliction, an eye that never closes even when he sleeps, makes it impossible for them to tell when they can make a break for it.

Manolo has decided to end his life and needs assistance. He has convinced Esmeralda, the caretaker of his hacienda, under the promise of leaving her the resources she needs to go live with her daughter and granddaughter in Baltimore. She only has one condition. She will not do anything unless Father Pablo vows to hear her confession after the act. Pablo decides to stay in the hacienda indefinitely, to impede them from doing anything. But he hardly does anything himself - and his time with Esmeralda will make him confront with his sense of goodness, and to check his pride and dogma, and the love he never found for his father.
"Una China Poblana" follows a Chinese-Filipino woman, Malaga, living in 1930s Mexico. Due to her race, many aspects of her life encounters hostility. When Malaga receives a death threat right before her big show in Mexico City, she doesn't choose to back down and faces whatever threat awaits her in the audience.
