Overview
A woman's husband apparently has deserted her and their daughter. So she decides to get on with her life which might include dissolving their union and seeing someone else. However, her in-laws, her husband's parents feel that she's acting very hastily, so she leaves their home with her daughter whom they love very much. She decides to limit their access to her daughter, but grandfather and granddaughter see each other on the sly.

Matti and Niila, growing up in the mid-sixties in the harsh and conservative environment of a Finnish-speaking part of Tornedalen in Swedish Laponia, close to the Finnish border. Their big dream is to become rock stars. In the present the now grown-up Matti feels guilt for the death of his drug-addicted rock star friend Niila.

In consequence of a violent incident that occurred when is son was a toddler, Luc Bisaillon has lost the right to be in Samuel's life. Years later, Luc desperately wants to form a bond with his teenage son before it's too late. But after being arrested for violating the restraining order issued against him, Luc realized he has zero chance of getting the order lifted before his son's eighteen birthday. He then decides to kidnap his son, and to take his deer hunting in a remote cabin in the woods.

Young Pud is orphaned and left in the care of his aged grandparents. The boy and his grandfather are inseparable. Gramps is concerned for Pud's future and wary of a scheming relative who seeks custody of the child. One day Mr. Brink, an agent of Death, arrives to take Gramps "to the land where the woodbine twineth." Through a bit of trickery, Gramps confines Mr. Brink, and thus Death, to the branches of a large apple tree, giving Gramps extra time to resolve issues about Pud's future.
