Overview

As a young woman, Tristana is orphaned and taken under the guardianship of Don Lope, a respected member of the community, who takes advantage of his innocent charge. When Tristana falls in love with artist Horacio, she must learn to be more assertive in order to achieve independence from her nefarious guardian, or her blossoming relationship with Horacio is doomed.

20 volunteers agree to take part in a seemingly well-paid experiment advertised by the university. It is supposed to be about aggressive behavior in an artificial prison situation. A journalist senses a story behind the ad and smuggles himself in among the test subjects. They are randomly divided into prisoners and guards. What seems like a game at the beginning soon turns into bloody seriousness.

Based upon the life of activist and trade unionist (and later MP) Sonja Davies. The film covers her life up to 1956, when, at age 33, she was elected to the Nelson Hospital Board. During this period she develops strong socialist beliefs, marries and divorces, at age 17 trains as a nurse, has a romance (and a child) with an American marine who is killed in WWII action. She battles tuberculosis and marries a former boyfriend when he returns from the war. She becomes part of a women's ill-fated campaign to save the Nelson railway line from closure and begins to be elected to political bodies.

In 1919, at the end of the Great War, Don Giovanni Minzoni returns to his parish in Argenta, in the province of Ferrara, wants to reorganize the social and cultural life of the community and tries to bring the rural children together into the old recreation center. The socialists, led by Natale Gaiba, the city councilor, openly show their disdain for Don Minzoni and his Church. After some time, anyhow, the relations with the socialists seem to begin, starting a relationship based on understanding and collaboration. At the same time another political force, modern and unexpected, makes its entrance into history and into the small village of Argenta. Fascism is taking hold in the cities and in the countryside throughout Italy, and even in Argenta the first riots and attacks begin…

In 1945, the Carlions assemble at an English country house for a family gathering. During the event, they must determine who is to take over the family brewing empire, since the present head of the business, Sir Frederick, is getting old. The results of the 1945 general election causes a major stir, and some angry farmers occupy a barn.
