Overview
Captain Duncan McTeague, ashore in Southport, finds a deserted baby boy with a note and half of a dollar bill pinned to its clothing. The note states that the mother hopes some day to return and identify the child with the other half of the dollar bill. McTeague raises the child. When he is four years old, the captain discharges his mate Martin Webber, who seeks revenge by kidnapping the boy.

Sir James Gilbert, a British peer, wagers that he can win the love of a particular young American woman for whom he has his heart set. Disguised as a chauffeur, James shows his love to Mary Burgess, niece of his wealthy employer, John Burgess. To obtain the consent of Mary's aunt, the couple involves her in a harmless trick. A villain threatens blackmail and attempts to pass himself off as the Sir James Gilbert. After a variety of adventures, the blackmailer's schemes are defeated. The young woman's hitherto hostile relatives are surprised and pleased when, instead of a chauffeur, Mary becomes the bride of Sir Gilbert.

A young woman, Molly Marble, is enmeshed in a train robbery by her crooked step-father. She meets a stranger, Jeff Morton, and suspects he knows where the loot is hidden. For the sake of her relatives, she must try to 'vamp' this information from him but, instead, she falls in love with him.

Finding shelter in an abandoned mansion, a group faces the challenges of coexistence. Free from traditional power structures, the black women experience power, love, and the possibility of dreaming about the future, while the white women resist learning to help with household chores, take care of themselves, and face their mistakes. When an old threat resurfaces, however, they all must band together to survive.

When petty criminal Luke Jackson is sentenced to two years in a Florida prison farm, he doesn't play by the rules of either the sadistic warden or the yard's resident heavy, Dragline, who ends up admiring the new guy's unbreakable will. Luke's bravado, even in the face of repeated stints in the prison's dreaded solitary confinement cell, "the box," make him a rebel hero to his fellow convicts and a thorn in the side of the prison officers.
