Overview
A young man over-comes extreme poverty, a dysfunctional home, peer ridicule, and death in his family to embark on an epic journey that takes him to England on an island scholarship. After World War II, Antonia and her daughter, Danielle, go back to their Dutch hometown, where Antonia's late mother has bestowed a small farm upon her. There, Antonia settles down and joins a tightly-knit but unusual community. Those around her include quirky friend Crooked Finger, would-be suitor Bas and, eventually for Antonia, a granddaughter and great-granddaughter who help create a strong family of empowered women.

Yeong-shin and Dong-hyuk graduate from college with a cause. They plan to bring education and modernization to farmers living in the rural area of their hometown. When they arrive, the pair immediately get to work, Dong-hyuk builds a village hall and starts aiding the farmers while Yeong-shin tries to gather the children to form a school. However, the villagers at first resent and resist the pair. It is not until one child, Ok-bun, takes the initiative and and learns to read under Yeong-shin’s care that the villages trust the pair and allow their children to be taken from the fields and taught reading, writing and math.

Seeking the truth in a human grey area. Lawyer Annabelle Martinelli has specialized in sexual offences and represents victims of domestic violence. Shoe salesperson Doreen Markowitz seeks her support after pressing charges against her husband Leon for assault and sexual violence. The opposing lawyer is Annabelle's ex-boss John Quante, a cunning and unscrupulous divorce lawyer. Annabelle is convinced that her client has been systematically intimidated, beaten and forced to have sex. But the evidence is thin. One of several cases she has to deal with which put her professional distance to the test.

Rick and Melissa are a pair of young lovers hoping to get out of the slums for good and escape the poverty and crime their families and friends have gotten involved in. All this comes to an end when Rick feels he must rejoin his old gang to avenge the killing of his cousin by a rival gang. In the course of getting even, Rick is arrested, leaving Melissa without anyone to protect her. She falls in with a crack dealer and quickly becomes addicted to the drug. When she gets taken by a drug kingpin to settle a debt, only Rick can save her.
