Overview
Shoji, who moved to Tokyo from Tohoku, meets Daisuke by chance and hits it off. Hoping to make quick money, the two join forces with the yakuza and start a loan shark business, lending money at exorbitant interest rates. Shoji is strong-willed and ruthlessly collects from debtors, while Daisuke is timid and unable to be completely ruthless. Despite their polar opposite personalities, the two get along surprisingly well, and their loan shark business is going smoothly. One day, Shoji is approached by Narimatsu, the boss of a gang, who is like a leader to him, to join the yakuza. Meanwhile, Daisuke discovers that his girlfriend Maika is in debt. With the money from Narimatsu's gang, Daisuke and Maika disappear.

Its owner, Whitey, is deep in debt to the town's loan shark, Joe McCollough, and desperate for a path forward which won't cost him the bar. His sister, Molly, is days away from her long-awaited nuptials, and then her former fiancé, Teddy, shows up in town for the first time since leaving her at the altar years before. Ne'er-do-well Billy Belasco runs a con on Frankie to steal the money for the wedding caterer, while long-time regular Bobby becomes a patron-cum-inhabitant as he hides from his fast-crumbling marriage to Vikki. Every plot in this multi-layered story seems to be at its nadir just as a pair of unlikely heroes emerge out of the backdrop to turn everything around.

David Wozniak is a perpetual adolescent who discovers that, as a sperm donor, he has fathered 533 children. He is advised that more than 100 of his offspring are trying to force the fertility clinic to reveal the true identity of "Starbuck," the pseudonym he used when donating his sperm. To make matters worse, his girlfriend Valérie is pregnant with his child, but doesn't feel that he is mature enough to be a father.
