Loosely based on the filmmaker's personal experience, "Terra Nullius" is an impressionistic account of an eight year old Koori girl, Alice, growing up in a white adoptive family which denies her Aboriginality. The film examines how unacknowledged shame and fear passes from one generation to the next, from one culture to another. The last scene depicts a silent meeting between the young Alice and the adult Alice. In order to reclaim her life, Alice decides she must confront the pain and confusion of her childhood.

Melvin, a teenager, returns to his past in an attempt to remember who he truly was after feeling he left himself behind. He confronts his teenage and childhood selves to reflect on the pains and changes of growing up, realizing that "growing up means losing and leaving behind versions of ourselves." A nostalgic and reflective journey about time, childhood, and accepting the constantly changing self.
On the surface, this is an attempt to navigate the experience of Dissociative Identity Disorder (aka DID), yet it hint towards the universal truth that at least to some extent, everyone is made up of fragmented selves. The film is an ode to the self, with shifts in everything from angles to color, in order to evoke the journey from avoidance to confrontation, and ultimately, healing.
