Overview
In Lemberg (Lviv) in 1897, Amelia Kryzhevska-Zeg returns to the family estate where she grew up after her honeymoon. She is full of hope for the future and dreams of opening her own pharmacy. But gradually, her childhood home turns into a treacherous trap, and Amelia's plans become unfulfillable desires.

The events in Sarajevo in June 1914 are the backdrop for a thriller directed by Andreas Prochaska and written by Martin Ambrosch, focusing on the examining magistrate Dr. Leo Pfeffer (Florian Teichtmeister) investigating the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This colourful, music-filled and sensual melodrama based on early stories by Maxim Gorky tells the fatal love story between the beautiful and rebellious girl Rada and the handsome horse thief Zobar. The story is set in early 20th century Bessarabia, now part of Moldova, then belonging to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Jozo and Mujo are mobilized in the Austro-Hungarian Army. Reluctantly drawn into the war they make a bond of unbreakable friendship. To realize the plan to leave hated Army, Jozo are pretending to be deaf and dumb. But his firm determination comes into question when his friend's life comes into mortal peril.

Locations covered include Passau, Germany; Salzburg, Oberndorf, the Wachau Valley, and Vienna in Austria; Bratislava, Slovakia; and Budapest, Hungary. Along the way the viewer learns relevant history.
