Famous playwright Paul Worden decamps to a country bungalow to work on a new play, rehearsing with his leading lady, Marjorie Sinclair, who is staying nearby. Going riding one day to relax, Paul rescues his neighbor, teenager Diana Ardway when her horse runs wild. The pair clash initially, as she does with Marjorie, but after a series of misunderstandings true love triumphs.
King Pausole is known for his relaxed rule and having a different wife for every day of the year. Princess Aline, the king's favorite, leaves the kingdom with Giglio, a modern, adventurous pilot, disrupting the kingdom's orderly hedonism. The king abandons his daily duties to hunt for his daughter, bringing him into contact with a world outside his own pampered experience.

Naïve young Englishman, Silas P. Binns inherits a substantial business in Chicago. Unaware of the city's reputation for rampant organized crime during the Prohibition era, Silas arrives in America with idealistic expectations. Upon his arrival, he finds himself inadvertently caught in the middle of a fierce and dangerous turf war between rival gangster factions. The humor of the film stems from Silas's "innocent" and oblivious nature as he navigates the violent underworld of Chicago, often mistaking life-threatening situations for ordinary business or social interactions.
Comedy of manners about the corrupt high society of 18th-century England, centering on Lady Sneerwell and her plot to ruin the reputation of Charles Surface and prevent his marriage to the wealthy Maria. She conspires with Joseph Surface, Charles's hypocritical brother, who also desires Maria for her fortune.

Rich but frivolous, Cynthia and John Karslake obscure their love for each other by their constant quarreling. Cynthia grows jealous of her husband when, one day at the races, she notices Vida Phillimore, a recent divorcée, flirting with him. Using this incident to inflame all her other petty grievances, Cynthia ends up in divorce court presided over by Vida's ex-husband, Judge Phillip Phillimore.

Bumbling policeman P.C. Josser is dismissed from the force after a disastrous attempt to distinguish himself at a nightclub. Mistaking his own comrades for criminals, he inadvertently "bowls them over like nine-pins," leading to his immediate firing. After losing his job, Josser sets himself up as a private detective. He is hired by a young lady who owns a racehorse and needs protection for her "favourite" horse before a big race. To protect the animal, Josser goes undercover as a stableman. Despite his efforts, the horse is drugged, leading to further comedic mishaps as he attempts to solve the case and redeem his reputation.

When a king suddenly abdicates, his subjects are lead to believe that it is for the love of a foreigner in this romance. In reality, he is stepping down so avaricious businessmen can crown their own man king. The deposed monarch spends his exile on the Riviera, while the woman, filled with guilt because he stepped down for her, lives in Holland. Interestingly enough, Edward VIII the King of England abdicated for the love of American woman Wallis Simpson a few weeks after this British film was released.
