At the end of the 1940s, Lebanon is sliding towards a devastating conflict. Catholic siblings Emilie and Emir decide to leave for Brazil. Aboard the ship to their new home, Emilie falls in love with Omar, a Muslim merchant. For an enraged and jealous Emir, the relationship is intolerable. As the story unfolds against the backdrop of the majestic rainforest, Emir’s actions and the choice that Emilie subsequently makes lead to disastrous consequences.

Marcelo was taken to Paris, where he has lived since he was 12. After the sudden death of his mother in 1992, he returns for the first time to the place where he was born. As he walks through the city of his childhood, a series of memories unfolds, revealing a story of friendship torn apart by tragedy and the social tensions that marked Brazil in the 1960s, leading him to question his identity and his place in the world.

Finding shelter in an abandoned mansion, a group faces the challenges of coexistence. Free from traditional power structures, the black women experience power, love, and the possibility of dreaming about the future, while the white women resist learning to help with household chores, take care of themselves, and face their mistakes. When an old threat resurfaces, however, they all must band together to survive.

When petty criminal Luke Jackson is sentenced to two years in a Florida prison farm, he doesn't play by the rules of either the sadistic warden or the yard's resident heavy, Dragline, who ends up admiring the new guy's unbreakable will. Luke's bravado, even in the face of repeated stints in the prison's dreaded solitary confinement cell, "the box," make him a rebel hero to his fellow convicts and a thorn in the side of the prison officers.
