Elina goes to a fairy school to learn dancing and fairy magic. The Psammead is an 'it', an ancient, ill-tempered sand-fairy with a spider-shaped body, bat-like ears, and snail-like eyes. It is grumpy but has the power to grant one wish a day, which must be made before sunset. Five siblings—Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane, and infant Hilary—encounter It and experience the highs and lows of frivolous wish-making.

Born of a flower and growing to only a couple of inches tall, poor Thumbelina is worried she'll never meet someone her own size, until she happens to catch the eye of Prince Cornelius of the Fairies. The epic magical battle between fairies rages on as young martial artist Cheung risks his life to rescue the Sky Mussel Fairy. No good deed goes unpunished, however, and for his daring but foolish antics, Cheung is cast out of his uncle's safe home. Now, Cheung wanders a perilous world of gods and demons. Only his fighting skills can keep him safe.

At the royal court, a prince is presenting the princess whom he is pledged to marry when a witch suddenly appears. Though driven off, the witch soon returns, summons some of her servants, and carries off the princess. A rescue party is quickly organized, but the unfortunate captive has been taken to a strange, forbidding realm, from where it will be impossible to rescue her without some special help.
