Overview
Algarve, late 90s. Following the death of her grandmother, Milene - a strong young woman full of life despite a slight mental handicap - divides her life between her family of notables and a Cape Verdean family that keeps her going, whom she met when her grandmother died. The wind that whistles in the cranes plunges us into the world of two families against the backdrop of Portugal's recent past.

When small town drifter Sammy Barlach drives into Venus Holler in search for his next cold beer and the bunch that'll have him, he gets a lot more than he bargained for, namely food, lodging and the possibility of a better future, thanks to crimson-haired Jamalee and her brother Jason, who dream of hitting the big time. This beautifully understated Western is the story of a son raised by two fathers, one from the European East and one from the American West. On the cusp of the 20th century, somewhere on the American frontier, Igor, an immigrant and recent widower, struggles to raise his two-year-old son Ivo on his own. When his American friend and mentor Duncan decides to move his horse-breeding business and young family to California, Igor and Ivo join the wagon train headed West.

In the final days of the American Civil War, an emigre Hungarian military officer attempts to map the situation of the enemy. Many veterans of the 1848 War of Independence in Hungary fought on the northern side. Experienced Fiala, Boldogh who struggles with homesickness and the reckless Vereczky all experience their enforced emigration in different ways and news of impending peace elicits different reactions from them all.

In an alternative Quebec, private clinics offer partial brainwashing treatment to remedy post-traumatic shock. Charlotte Roy, a young woman who lost a loved one in a work accident, meets Doctor Dufour to make an appointment to receive this treatment, 24 hours later. She hides it as best she can from her loved ones, who are beginning to worry about her. Between the suspicions of her friend Sarah, the insistence of her mother and her own doubts, Charlotte navigates through these final hours which, she hopes, will be the last of a long year of suffering.
