After the elevators at a New York City skyscraper begin inexplicably malfunctioning, putting its passengers at risk, mechanic Mark Newman and reporter Jennifer Evans begin separate investigations. Newman gets resistance from superiors at his company, which manufactured the elevator, while additional elevator incidents cause several gruesome deaths. The police get involved and suspect that terrorists are responsible, but a far stranger explanation looms.

A recent kidnapping has single mom Susan worried about leaving her daughter Christy at home for an out-of-town trip - until neighbor Teri offers to "babysit," looking in on Christy and spending the night. But Susan rushes home when Christy goes missing, under circumstances reminiscent of her police detective husband's death. Susan will have to open the past wound of her husband's death in order to rescue the only family she has left.

Author John Dykstra, who writes under the pen name Rick Hardin, has had too much beer to drink at his mystery writer’s group meeting and desperately needs to find a rest stop on his return from Jacksonville, Florida to Sarasota, Florida. There is only one other car at the rest stop, and he overhears its occupants in the ladies’ bathroom. He hears a woman’s and a man’s voice coming from the bathroom, and the sounds of domestic abuse. Based on the short story "Rest Stop" by Stephen King.
