Ruth Ellis lives with her ten-year old son Andy next to a night club. One night she meets David Blakely, and they start a love affair. James, a disturbed high schooler retreats from a culture of prescription drugs, religion, and a near-constant stream of harassment into a comic-book fantasy world he’s created featuring a hero called The Indestructible. Increasing pressure from his mother, fellow students and his teachers eventually push him to the breaking point, and the lines between fantasy and reality, which were already beginning to blur, shatter entirely after a violent encounter with a school bully.

London, 1888: on the night of the third Jack the Ripper killing, soft-spoken Mr. Slade, a research pathologist, takes lodgings with the Harleys, including a gloomy attic room for "experiments." Mrs. Harley finds Slade odd and increasingly suspects the worst; her niece Lily (star of a decidedly Parisian stage revue) finds him interesting and increasingly attractive. Is Lily in danger, or are her mother's suspicions merely a red herring?
