Author Otto Dean braves his fears of impending death as he sets out to write a novel opposing the controlling presence of heartless artwork & propaganda in an alternate 1980s America after being recognized for his opinion piece in the newspaper. Upon visiting a local art hot spot and speaking with a woman named Lorelei, he learns of recent murders in the area & encounters an uncanny resemblance between his own recurring dreams and a local artist's work, leading him down a further rabbit hole as he tries to catch hold of the elusive artist Inez Sabalenka.

Lebanon, Mother's day. Joey (20 years old) is preparing a surprise diner for his mom who is always abroad. but today is a special day because she is here, but not willing to stay till the evening, until they celebrate. Tortured with the idea of her leaving again, Joey tries to convince her mom to stay. But the mother is here for another reason: pushing her son to tidy his house and to accept change.

Inside a café, on Christmas Eve. Chim Kei meets an enigmatic woman named Mimi Wong who introduces herself as the daughter of an upper-crust family. But the infatuated writer is struck by a spasm of sorrow when he later sees Mimi make her appearance as a taxi-dancer at a party. The lovers are reconciled by the story of her plight told by her sister Annie. However, Mimi goes missing on the engagement day. By a stroke of luck, Chim runs into the elusive woman again and finds out how she was forced into prostitution by her drug-addict husband, his childhood best friend and benefactor Chan Hung-kit. Chim leaves dejectedly, and has since been idling his days away. The frail Mimi confesses her love for Chim on her deathbed, and from not far away, Chan has ended his own life.

After writing for Cahiers du cinéma, a young Jean-Luc Godard decides making films is the best film criticism. He convinces producer Georges de Beauregard to fund a low-budget feature, and creates a treatment with fellow New Wave filmmaker François Truffaut about a gangster couple. The result? Breathless, one of the first features of the Nouvelle Vague era of French cinema.

In the seacoast town of Boulogne, antique furniture saleswoman Hélène lives with her stepson, Bernard, who's back from military duty in Algiers. An old lover of Hélène's comes to visit, Alphonse, with his niece Françoise; he too is back from Algiers, where he ran a café. Bernard speaks of his fiancée, Muriel, whom Hélène has not met. The past is obscured by guilt, misperceptions, and missed possibilities. Appearances deceive, things change. As Hélène and Alphonse try to sort out a renewal, everyone seems off-kilter just enough to hint that all cannot end well.
